The idea for this library came from the Black Sheeps film. A scruffy bunch of protestors turn up & one of them has a loud hailer. Of course dialogue isn’t my department but I needed button clicks & feedback, so I bought a big old megaphone that looked like its been to plenty of protests! One aspect that especially appealed is that this model had a detachable microphone, connected via a coiled cable, which meant feedback could be performed.

While visiting a friend Phil Burton, who also did temp mix for us, and mentioning my megaphone, he kindly grabbed his from his foley room & loaned it to me. Its a bit smaller, more modern and had an alarm setting.

So this library contains likely far more megaphone than you will ever need, but as per the making of vid these loud hailers are capable of so many interesting sounds – I almost started playing tunes with the feedback!

Buttons, noise bursts, sustained noise and lots of feedback – short bursts, squeals, sustained, moving, muffled etc

The older megaphone also glitched at times, I think due to battery starvation. The connection the batteries press against was a bit corroded and did not initially work. But before I resolved that it made for some intermittent sounds and glitchy oscillations.

This is one of the loudest libraries I have recorded, requiring ear plugs to perform loud characterful feedback…

Recorded 32 bit 192kHz with Sanken CUX100K microphone pair and Sennheiser MKH8040 pair and MKH8050 to Sound Devices MixPre1- II.
Released 24bit 192kHz with photos and UCS metadata.
