Big old metal shipping trunks like this one were more common back in the day, as they were often used when migrating all the way around the globe to New Zealand. All of a families possessions would be carefully packed and then shipped between ports. This one still has the labels indicating the 23000km/15000mile journey by sea from the UK to NZ. But You can imagine the first thing I did when I got my hands on this one… I gave it a thump to check the resonance!

Fitting it in my little SUV was the first challenge, and then wrestling it into the studio was the second. But once there, I started off recording lid slams & latch moves and then started performing impacts. At this point I placed the MKH8020 pair inside the crate and wow the bass thump is beautiful, especially mixed with the external mics.

For more weighty impacts I slammed a boxing bag on it, as well as some metal props… And then with the lid closed I captured some friction sounds, scraping & dragging objects on the lid. After adding many dents I also captured some lid contortions, generating loud stressed metal sounds as the lid crumpled in places…

For the second half of this library, I placed two Dayton Bass Shakers underneath the crate and fed them sub bass tones from my Korg MS10, sweeping through low frequencies to find resonance and shaking the entire crate.

The resulting library is a surprisingly diverse collection of immediately useful practical effects along with some unexpected and unusual sounds!
