I originally got this Tesla Coil thinking I would use it as part of the upcoming EMF library. But playing with it revealed so many potential sounds that it deserved its own library.
First recordings were made free standing, followed by physically restricting the plasma arcs within glass & plastic objects. But the key to expanding the range of possible sounds came via audio input. Creating source sounds on my modular synth, and feeding them to the Tesla Coil led to more interesting rhythmic patterns and tonalities….
This library is a fantastic resource for sharp, zappy sounds and unique glitch patterns. As the sounds have a high noise aspect, they respond well to processing too, enabling futuristic and scifi sound design.
Recording this has been great research for a future project, recording a large scale Tesla Coil which has MIDI input. Once access is confirmed and scheduled, I will canvas owners of this library for any MIDI sequences & patterns they might like performed.
Recorded 32bit 192kHz with Sanken CUX100K mics, Sennheiser MKH8040 LR and MKH8050 close.
