Results from first test recordings of an old Piano Harp. Struck bass notes, dropping a bowling ball, metal frame hits, dampened hits & some high clusters, captured to 8 tracks with MKH8040x2 + MKH8020 x2 + Sanken CUX100K + LOM Geofon + Contact Mics x2 plus a mixed version.

This library was created from test recordings with the old piano harp that was donated to me. Once I’d moved it into my studio, I lay it across a large wooden box which I thought would be useful to act as a resonator. Before I rigged any mics I had a good play with different ideas & techniques… Once I was happy with the stability of frame (its quite heavy!) and what I was aiming to capture, I then rigged mics & did two test recording sessions. I wanted to hear the sounds on my studio monitors before proceeding with many, many recording sessions…
With no dampening the decay from a single hit is over 45 seconds (thanks to the Geofon & Contact Mics) but I will also be capturing a LOT of dampened percussive hits on the bass strings, as the tonality & harmonics vary a lot along the string and I want to capture enough to build really interesting ‘fun to play’ Sampler instruments with many round robins from these recordings too, which means a lot of painstaking consistent performance & recording… which I don’t want to repeat!
For these test recordings the final mic configuration is:
1+2 MKH8040 capturing stereo image of entire harp
3+4 MKH8020 x2 inside the wooden box resonator its resting on
5 Sanken CUX100K close up
6 LOM Geofon attached to steel frame
7+8 Contact Mic pair attached to steel frame at far end
I will do one more test with a pair of Sanken CUX100K mics where the MKH8040s currently are, and the MKH8050 back where it was…
The example recordings in this little test library include:
