At an improv gig a few years ago I saw a drummer play their snare with a chain and at the time I thought it was an interesting idea. Having the ability to create sustain with a snare drum usually requires playing with brushes whereas a chain has its own tonality and unique performance potential. So I have explored this approach using four chain weights on a vintage Pearl rock snare drum.
Recorded performances include these 14 articulations, with four chain weights
– chain dragging across snare drum
– chain dragging across snare drum, rhythmically repeating
– chain lowering on to snare drum, fast
– chain lowering on to snare drum, slow
– chain lowering on to snare drum, rhythmically repeating
– chain drop on to snare drum, loose
– chain drop on to snare drum, loose with rim hits
– chain drop on to snare drum, bunched (short decay)
– chain drop on to snare drum, damped (short decay)
– chain moves on snare drum, sustained
– chain moves on snare drum, sustained erratic
– chain flicks shakes (free, no snare)
– chain drops catches (free, no snare)
– chain handling (free, no snare)
Multiple takes of every performance were multitrack recorded 32bit 192kHz using:
– Sennheiser MKH8050 close up
– Sanken CUX100K close up
– Sennheiser MKH8040 LR
The library is released 24bit 96kHz with full UCS metadata and photos, with 1 second of silence between takes for auto slicing and/or export.
