This is a retro workshop light that I got as part of an old dark room setup, its the kind of light you might find hanging up in a workshop or underneath a car… But as soon as I picked it up, I made a mental note of the sound it creates,a gentle rattle of metal & glass that is characterful enough to be worth preserving.
While this is the kind of sound a foley team might usually cover, such sounds are also useful as compoents & elements as a sound effects editor…
And lightening the workload of a foley team can be invaluable, especially if it requires sourcing particular props or as temp FX.
I started off being gentle, as didn’t want to break the bulb, but when I plugged it in I discovered the bulb was already blown so I unscrewed the bulb a bit so it was even more rattly & I captured moves this way too: single rattles, phrases, repeating rhythmic versions, sustained rattles, and passbys of the mics… Plus it turns out the wire cover is latched so you can replace the bulb, so I also recorded latch open and closes, and a seperate pass of creaky latch squeaks…
