Last time we had a major Nor’West gale wind, I noticed it shaking the old shipping crate that had been sitting outside since I recorded it for FX026 TRUNK METAL CRATE. The weather forecast predicted even stronger winds to come, so I decided to rig my mics inside the metal trunk with the recorder and leave it recording until the battery ran out.

The next morning I went to retrieve it, and at some stage the wind was so strong it had blown away the concrete blocks I’d wedged against the door… Thankfully my mics & recorder didn’t get wet, but the recorder rolled for over four hours!

From the recordings I have selected sustained stormy dry gusts as well as some with scattered rain, although the storm had very little rain. Individual strong gusts were also seperated out. Another aspect of the recordings is the metal wind vane which is mounted above where the trunk was sitting. It has a rusty bracket & creaks when a strong change of direction in wind occurs. Some of those creaks are amongst the gusts, as well as a series of single wind vane creaks seperated out.
The recordings are powerful and have considerable sub bass at times, especially the MKH8020s which reach down to 10Hz. While the enclosure is not large enough for an interior reverb, the contained acoustic contributes to the coherence & really captures the power of the wind gusts.

But also interesting, over the course of 4 hours there were so many huge heavy wind impacts & door slams that I’ve split them off into their own library.
