The kitchen in my house has an ‘Insinkerator’ waste disposal unit built into the sink, which basically pulverises anything you put in it. The idea being to minimise garbage by shredding and liquifying it so it can go down the drain. Unfortunately mine is reaching the end of its life, and makes nasty sounds reminescent of some kind of metal monster. This is partly due to having accidentally dropped a few objects in it which jammed it. In one case it completely jammed and when I got a plumber in to fix it, he pulled a long metal screw out, which had somehow got into the sink & jammed the grinding mechanism…

So before it dies I figured I would record it! I used the pair of Sanken CUX mics up top, and below the sink I placed the MKH8050 and the LOM Gefon. But while investigating other issues (ah the joy of old houses…) I discovered quite interesting drain sounds can be heard by listening at drain access points. So I added an MKH8020 to the shower drain, and another MKH8020 in the back porch at a drain access point. These provide an interesting perspective of the waste disposal mechanism itself and the water flowing down the drain…
