Kahurangi is an epic National Park reaching from the West Coast of the South island across to Takaka, covering an area of 5,193 km2 (2,005 sq mi) of primeval forest. I love the West Coast as its one of the least developed regions in NZ, and I have revisited the location of these recordings many times as the remote location and abundant bird life provides a glimpse of what Aotearoa must have been like pre-colonisation.
At the end of the long gravel road is a carpark, providing access to walking tracks including Honeycomb Hill Caves Area (as recorded for AMB013 CAVES) as well as the scenic Omaparare Arch. But the first thing you notice when you stop driving is the bird life!
To my ears Bellbirds are one of the most melodic native birds along with Tuis (the only bird with two voice boxes!) Kereru (wood pigeons), Robins, Wekas, Pukekos, Piwakwaka.
Experiencing them without human sonic pollution is a joy to behold!
