This is a fully restored 1927 Chev Roadster that my Dad bought and I did these recordings with him driving back in December 2022. Sadly he passed away October 2023, age 93 years and I inherited the car, and have since moved it up to local storage, and thoroughly enjoy taking it for a drive on a sunny day.

The engine is 4 cylinder 2.8 litre and generates 26HP, with a 3 speed transmission and no syncro mesh. Changing down gears takes some double clutching & patience… I have documented the full history of the car at my personal site here including each of the owners and the restoration work done.

For these recordings I rigged onboard with six microphones to Sound Devices 788 Recorder
in cabin: MKH8020 x2
in engine bay: MKH8040 + Dynamic mic
by exhaust: MKH8040 + Dynamic mic

At the same time I recorded exterior moves using Sound Devices 722 Recorder,
following action with MKH70 and MKH8050.

The main action we covered includes:
– Start, idle off
– Start, away
– Up, stop
– Passbys at various speeds

The car is not high revving, and has long throw pistons which provide a lot of torque. The maximum speed is 45mph. When idling & at slow speeds, the exhaust note has an adorable ‘burble’ to it.

My plan is to do more recording later this year with this car before eventually selling it, to fund purchase of another classic or vintage car to record. So this is volume 1 of recordings and I am happy to take requests for volume 2. When I do those recordings, I will be able to record with full onboard & full exterior setup at the same time. So I will take the same approach with six onboard mics to 788 recorder, but exterior would use my MixPre10-II to both follow action and to also get fixed perspective approach/away & passbys.
