The retro kettle on the left is another junk store find from Waitaki Trading Post in Oamaru. Intrigued by the attachment on the spout I picked it up & blew air through it with my mouth & it whistled! So I took it home and put it on a single hot element in my studio… It took ages to boil, but once it did it made an interesting range of whistles – shrill but sometimes unstable and undulating chaotic tones with weird pitch fluctuations…
So I recorded it with the Sanken CUX100K mics. And while I was in this mode, I also recorded a modern kettle from my kitchen, heating water to a boil – with the lid closed and then open for louder bubbling water.
Useful for practical effects, but captured with the Sanken CUX100K mics there is also lots of potential to create tones & drones from the range of whistle and unquantized chaotic pitch behaviour…
Go on, make the dogs bark!
Recorded 32 bit 192kHz to Sound Devices MixPre10- II recorder with Sanken CUX100K pair and Sennheiser MKH8050. Released 24bit 192kHz with photos and UCS metadata.
