I came across this kids toy in a junk store and at first thought it was some kind of blocky voodoo doll.
Made from wooden blocks it uses a clever binding mechanism to enable movement of each block, and when shaken it produces such a nice complex organic wooden rattle.
So I set to & performed every kind of sound I could think of with it, including:
– Shakes while held freely – phrases, sustained, repeating rhythms & passbys the mics
– Shakes while suspended on string – phrases & flicks
– Hits & impacts on my hand – on my hand, on soft wall, carpet, on wood
– Moves, drags on wood
– Individual leg and arm moves, and single footsteps, plus walk phrases and bodyfalls
Recorded 32 bit 192kHz to Sound Devices MixPre10- II recorder with Sennheiser MKH8040 pair and MKH8050. Released 24bit 192kHz with photos and UCS metadata.
