This library is the result of deconstructing a piano, and using the harp or strung sounding board to perform sound effects. In terms of performance, the library is organised by type:
– Hits, impacts, scrapes on bass, mid & high strings, with full decay & dampened variations, clean & rattly
– Bounces & strums on bass, mid & high strings using crow bar, bowling ball, claw, metal rod, ruler, threaded rod, metal plate
– Dremel grinds & moves on bass strings
– Wind-up toy vibration on bass strings
– Friction mallet and shrill bolt scrapes on strings
– Note clusters dropping dominoes & pickup sticks on strings
– Cut metal strings/wire hits, impacts, movement
Due to the size, the library is available in two forms.
SD082 PIANO HARP DECONSTRUCTED MIX = stereo mixes of all microphones = 11GB in total
Note: the mix versions are not ‘hyped’ – they are balanced by ear and the only processing is some light limiting. The interesting & characterful sound of this library originates in the instrument, the performances & how they were captured and not from stacking plugins & forcing you to work with heavily processed sound. I have nothing against plugins, but processing & design is for each person to choose depending on the source material, their taste, their tools, their skills and the specific use case…
SD083 PIANO HARP DECONSTRUCTED SOURCE = all eight individual microphones = 45GB in total
With all material on seperate tracks, a unity gain mix with some light limiting will match the mix versions. To assemble a mix session in less than ten seconds, import all audio to a new session. Do a FIND for ‘8040’ & drag all found media to a new track. Repeat for ‘8020’ then ‘Contact’ then ‘CUX’ then ‘Geofon’. Done.
The piano harp was rigged with 8 mics, recording 32/192k to a Sound Devices MixPre 10-II
A = Sennheiser MKH8040x2 LR aimed at strings & soundboard
B = Sennheiser MKH8020x2 LR inside the wooden resonator box which the piano frame is resting on, for lovely deep bass..
C = Trance Audio Contact Mics x2 on each side of the bridge
D = Sanken CUX100K C near impact point (repositioned often)
E = LOM Geofon on metal frame for subs
