I saw this video on instagram – a drummer using a ‘massage gun’ to make drum & bass ‘braams’ on a shed, while he plays kick & snare… But I forgot about it until I got cramp in my calf muscle. So I got a couple of vibe guns & after experimenting & testing them out I recorded a library using them to activate different objects, including:
– a large metal tray, with thunder sheet tendencies
– a resonant steel trash can (free and dampened)
– a stainless steel laundry sink (free and dampened)
– a large rigid copper pot
– a shed (MKH8040s outside, MKH8020s inside the shed)
– a giant balloon
– a wooden chest
The very rigid objects (wood, copper) made the vibe gun bounce, creating erratic rhythms, whereas others feel like heavy machinery in operation.
Phrases and swells feel like powerful bassy tones & sting elements, with interesting, evolving tonality. Check the video & audio previews to hear the potential.
Captured 32bit 192kHz and in studio Sanken CUX100K, Sennheiser MKH8040 and MKH8050 mics. For the shed I used Sennheiser MKH8040 exterior and MKH8020 pair interior. Released 24bit 192kHz with photos and full UCS metadata
