Ehrlund EAP Contact Mics really do hear up to 100kHz!
re the Roof Iron
In my very early days I cut FX for a short film with a difficult director… There was a scene set in a shed with tin roof & nothing I recorded & edited for it was right according to the director… After much frustration I suddenly realsied what I needed to do. I got some sheets of roof iron & strung them up.. And I gave the director the headphones & I let him pewrform the sounds while hearing how they sounded via the mics… We recorded maybe 20min of sounds, then I loaded the recordings (real time transfer to ProTools, this was before digital recorders)
And then I made him set down & go through the recordings and pick the bits he liked. I cut those in and just like that all problems went away!!
The thing I realised was not that I needed to hang some roof iron up.
The thing I realised is the moral of this story: make people own their decisions!!
He was a control freak & I suspect a self prescribed genius, so only he could know what was the ‘right’ sound.
Once I realised that, I just gently made him own the decisions at every step.
You don’t like what I did? OK show me what you do like.
OK now make them be even more specific – which bits of that? And where?
Directors like to direct, but some directors also like to micro manage which tends to lead to worse outcomes for everything and everyone…
C’es la vie!
