These tuned wind pipes were inspired by the work of Nicolas Bras who makes incredible wind instruments from PVC pipes.
I collected up eight different lengths of pipe and after much fcking around experimenting I got them working and used them as two sets of four to record material for an upcoming ambience library. In that setup the pipes were ‘played’ by the wind – a gale Nor’Wester.
But these wind pipes make beautiful soft sounds whenever they are moved, so for this library I recorded in my studio with them gaffer taped to an electric potters wheel capable of spinning up to 300rpm. The potters wheel handily has a foot controller for rotation speed so I could ramp speed up and down again…
I recorded with the wind flutes in a range of configurations:

Performances include
– fast short whizz up & slow down
– sustained drones at fixed speeds
– undulating drones with varying speed
It is mesmerising to be in the room & hear the harmonics shift as speed varies, especially when slowing down… And also a little dangerous at high speeds!!
Recorded 32bit 192kHz with a pair of Sennheiser MKH8040 aimed at centre of movememnt, and a pair of MKH8020 omni mics wider. Released 24bit 192kHz with a photo of each setup and pipe config noted in UCS metadata.
