HISSandaROAR now support UCS Metadata!

This has been a huge amount of work, and has also provided the opportunity to standardise naming, metadata and to correct any spelling mistakes. If you would like to learn more about the Universal Category System and why it is important, please visit the official UCS site HERE

How do you get UCS Metadata for HISSandaROAR?

All HISSandaROAR libraries now have UCS Metadata embedded, by default.
ALL downloads from Aug 11th, 2021 contain UCS metadata!

How do you get UCS Metadata for older HISSandaROAR libraries?

1. SoundMiner users are able to directly update the metadata for their existing libraries from within SoundMiner, which syncs and updates based on a combination of manufacturer metadata field “HISSandaROAR” and an audio fingerprint. Even if you have changed the names, SoundMiner will still identify and update the metadata. Nifty!

To update your HISSandaROAR Metadata, simply find all HISSandaROAR Libraries in SoundMiner and select them. Then go to DATABASE menu and select Lookup Metadata From Cloud
Your files will slowly be updated with UCS Metadata, like magic! Thanks Justin!

UPDATE: 20210813
Confirming UCS Metadata is uploaded to SoundMiner Metadata cloud.
Please check all used fields, “Notes” = UCS Filename

UPDATE 20210913 TECH NOTE: Three early HISSandaROAR libraries do not update UCS correctly as the Manufacturer field is not set correctly to ‘HISSandaROAR’ – this is an easily fixed issue with these libraries:
SD004 FIREWORKS + SD006 TORTURED PIANO + SD007 WATER FOLEY
To correct these, please select all media in these libraries in SoundMiner
Then edit metadata field: Manufacturer setting it to: HISSandaROAR
Then UCS update works as expected!

UPDATE 20211104 TECH NOTE: If SoundMiner will not update the metadata, so far there have been only two potential issues:

1. check every sound has the Manufacturer field correctly assigned to “HISSandaROAR”
2. check you are updating the original WAV files.
If you have converted the audio to another file format, or changed its sample rate, then SoundMiners auto-update will not work. If that is the case and you no longer have the original media then feel free to email me to request a new download.

2. Updated metadata is available for all libraries below, as an Excel spreadsheet and tab separated text. These can be used with whichever sound library app you use, to update their metadata. Please refer to the manual for your sound library app for methodology. Also note: Photos will have to be assigned to WAV files prior to embed of metadata. This is a significant amount of work! I literally spent entire days of my life dragging & dropping JPGs to WAV files…

HISSandaROAR Do Not Use UCS File Names – Why?

UCS Metadata is invaluable, but we do not use the proposed USC filename scheme for two reasons:

1. Text readability. Replacing space with underscore reduces readability, and a filename starting with metadata meant for machine-reading degrades readability further, essentially prioritizing machine reading over actual human readability.

2. IMHO Information theory best practice is to move from simplicity, towards complexity.
The primary aim of a filename? Can you instantly ID a sound by glancing at the first two words of its name, without having to think what does ABCxyz mean? Start simple, keep the complexity for those who want it.

Of course, it’s a choice, and what ever works best for you is what’s right.

NOTE: If you wish to use UCS filenames

1. Access them via the “Notes” field in our UCS metadata
2. Use Renamer spreadsheets, available below.

DOWNLOAD RENAMING SPREADSHEETS

We provide renaming spreadsheets for use with batch renaming apps.
To insure backwards compatibility we will provide these in three forms.

1. LEGACY Filename to V2 Filename (minor changes/fixes) – DOWNLOAD
2. LEGACY Filename to UCS FilenameDOWNLOAD
3. V2 Filename to UCS FilenameDOWNLOAD

To be very clear:
LEGACY Filename refers to every HISSandaROAR library downloaded BEFORE AUG11 2021
V2 Filename refers to every library downloaded AFTER AUG11 2021
UCS Filename start with CatID and all spaces are replaced with underscore.

WARNING! Renaming files places the onus on you the end user, to verify that this process will not cause issues with existing projects. Some DAWs and apps are better at relinking to new media than others, so please proceed carefully with renaming.

For batch renaming using the Tab Seperated Text files in OSX as provided, we use A Better Finder Rename
A PDF with step-by-step instructions is here

For batch renaming using the CSV files use the UCS renaming utility available here

If you ever need to rename in the opposite direction, simply open the spreadsheet and swap the two columns:
Column 1 = original filename, Column 2 = new filename.
