If you told me you recorded a sound library of cardboard boxes, my first question would be why, and second would be how. Why is easy to answer. During work on BLACK SHEEPS film there was a scene where someone in the throws of mutation stumbles across their office & kicks some cardboard boxes. Diving into my sound library I couldn’t find anything and recorded what we needed for the film, but I made a mental note & started saving cardboard boxes…
Once I had a dozen or so, scaling in size from a small rigid box that one of my SSDs came in, through to the box a 65″ TV is shipped in, I next considered how. Like, obviously I’ll capture ‘normal’ perspective of sound with the MKH8040/8050/8040 LCR but how could I increase possibilities of use by other means. I ended up lying the big TV box on the floor and put two MKH8020s inside it, so every time I threw or kicked a box at it, the landing would create big thumpy bass-heavy sounds when heard by the mics inside the big box.
So I took my collection of boxes and one by one kicked & threw them across the room, then augmented some by putting weights in them, then built a big pile & kicked it… Then I got a golf club, crowbar & an axe & dragged them across the surface capturing slow moves & fast zips…
Next I wondered how I could create more complex impacts, so I got my little collection of four whips and captured hits with each, plus sustained moves with a whip in each hand. Then I got a big length of chunky rope & did drops & drag moves with it.
And last, I tried ‘walking’ using a big box my NAS came in on one hand and a similarly large Drobo box in the other. Single alternating stomps plus phrase moves were captured…
The result is a useful practical sound effects library that also will warrant further exploration, as some of the sounds made me think of body falls.. and the cadence as a box tumbles, generates useful natural timing elements… Plus now I can clear all the boxes out of my record room!!
Recorded 32 bit 192kHz to Sound Devices MixPre1- II recorder with Sennheiser MKH8040 pair and MKH8050 plus Sennheiser MKH8020 pair inside the boxes.
Released 24bit 192kHz with photos and UCS metadata.
