Remember CDs? Remember when APPLE ran a campaign, encouraging you to “RIP MIX BURN” your own CDs?
As with vinyl, many people ditched their CD collections and someone on our local FB community group recently tried to give away a pair of metal CD Racks but found there was no interest.. So I got in touch & swapped them for some spare courgettes, as I had a theory…. My first thought was that the sturdy but light-gauge steel could be quite resonant, and it is – with about a 5 second decay when recorded via contact mics. So using four different mallets (soft woven, rubber, wood, metal) I captured enough hits & impacts for variety & round robin, as well as some ratchets…
But my main interest was in the potential of all of the horizontal strips of steel – they almost looked like they could be tines on a kalimba. So after recording the intact rack, I used a pair of bolt cutters to sever the horizontals to random lengths. Plucking pairs of tines with my fingers generated a lovely bassy tonality, while strumming the tines with a snare brush created a sound reminiscent of playing spokes on a bicycle wheel. Before finishing recording I also grabbed my battery drill & captured some rhythm phrases…
Recorded 32bit 192kHz using a pair of Trance Audio Acturus Contact Mics this new mini FX library is now released 24bit 192kHz with full UCS metadata & photos of each setup.
Each action includes 10+ takes, for variations & round robin use. This is why this “mini” library is so large in size.
