Polystyrene is such a light but rigid form of material, it provides a unique ‘break’ every time you snap a bit in half. I collected up all the space bits I could find, ranging in size up to a large icebox size, and then enjoyed myself breaking them into pieces, one by one, until the bits were too small to break anymore!
When I finished recording SD059 POLYSTYRENE I thought I’d have a pile of broken bits, but I didn’t end up breaking many at all. So it was only when I recently went to take some other poly blocks to be recycled & snapped a few to fit them in a bag that I realised it wasn’t a sound I had captured before at all.
Recorded 32bit 192kHz with Sanken CUX100K microphones.
Released 24bit 192kHz with photos and full UCS metadata.
