Unfortunately farming can involve many forms of pest control but thankfully these brutal devices were replaced long ago by more humane means of eradication.
Setting these traps takes some care as it requires considerable force, and the trigger mechanism responds to even a gentle touch or bump.
When triggered the steel jaws snap shut very rapidly. Primarily using a piece of wood I tried different levels of touch, and found even a gentle rope movement would trigger them!
After I’d recorded a dozen powerful snaps, I took the pair of traps and performed movement sounds. The old rusty steel and chains contribute characterful metal effects – useful far beyond the immediate snappy use.
Recorded 32bit 192kHz with Sanken CUX100K mics, Sennheiser MKH8040 LR and MKH8050 close.
