Every time I go on a road trip, shooting photos and recording sounds, I try to stay in a variety of rental properties. Using Air BnB as well as local sites such as Book a Bach and Holiday Houses my criteria is either (a) a great view of landscape, water front, night sky etc or (b) a characterful house which hopefully contains interesting sounds. Once I arrive I first do a quick recce, checking all of the doors and any other objects with potential.
This house was a neat old bach on Mahia Peninsula. Apart from having an excellent outdoor bath on the back deck, the interior had been perfectly renovated and all of the furniture matched its 1950s roots. As soon as I sat in this beautiful old chair I noticed that a part of the reason for its comfort was due to it being supported by a network of springs, which made some interesting sounds! But if you leaned back in the chair, the seta part would slide forward… and with my weight on it, it really groaned!
I was about half way through my little recording session when I heard a knock on the door. I sheepishly opened the door to find one of neighbours who and been out fishing and thinking it was the owners staying and come over to offer me a fish! I explained what I was up to, they had a good laugh and I swapped them a few beers for the fish…
