To record this library I visited one of the most pristine and wild areas of New Zealand – the West Coast of the South Island. I stalked swellmap and ended up waiting four days for a big swell to arrive, but the wait was worth it! I researched the best places to get close to the big stormy surf, and tracked the tides to put myself just out of harms way in very treacherous locations – check the making of video for one location (Constant Bay in Charleston) where me & my mics almost got wet thanks to some massive three metre waves pounding into the rocks!
Recorded with multiple microphones (Sennheiser MKH8040 ORTF pair, MKH70 pair and DPA 4060 omni pair) along with multiple perspectives (close and very wide for that distant sea rumble & roar) this library is perfect for stormy seas, big wave crashes & spray on to rocks!
